How MTA Pension Calculation Works
Understanding the step-by-step process behind your MTA pension benefits calculation
Try the CalculatorAnnual Pension = FAS × Years of Service × 2%
This formula applies to most MTA pension tiers
Final Average Salary (FAS)
Average of your highest 3 consecutive years of pensionable salary
Years of Service
Total creditable service time including purchased service
2% Multiplier
Standard benefit accrual rate per year of service
Step-by-Step Calculation Process
Your FAS is calculated using the highest 3 consecutive years of pensionable salary during your career.
Example:
- Year 1: $72,000
- Year 2: $75,000
- Year 3: $78,000
- FAS = ($72,000 + $75,000 + $78,000) ÷ 3 = $75,000
Add up all creditable service time, including:
- Regular employment service
- Military service (if purchased)
- Previous public service (if transferred)
- Leave of absence (if credited)
Multiply your FAS by years of service and the 2% benefit factor:
Example Calculation:
- FAS: $75,000
- Years of Service: 25 years
- Calculation: $75,000 × 25 × 0.02 = $37,500
- Annual Pension: $37,500
- Monthly Pension: $3,125
Final adjustments may include:
- Early retirement reduction: If retiring before full retirement age
- Maximum benefit cap: Cannot exceed 100% of FAS
- Survivor benefit election: May reduce benefit for spousal coverage
Important Considerations
To be eligible for a pension, you must be vested:
- 10 years of creditable service minimum
- Service must be creditable under MTA rules
Different retirement ages affect your benefits:
- Age 62+: Full benefits with 10+ years
- Age 55+: Full benefits with 30+ years
- Earlier: Reduced benefits may apply
